Dear Fashion/Beauty Bloggers, Magazine Editors and the Fashion Industry!

When I watched the live stream of the lucky magazine fashion and beauty bloggers conference online yesterday I had one thought going through my mind – When will the UK fashion media realise the importance of bloggers? Times are a changing and more and more young women are seeking style inspiration not from the likes of Vogue magazine but from bloggers like Susie Bubble. So when will UK fashion mags start hosting blogger events like the FABB one? Lucky Magazine also announced their new venture The Lucky Style Collective which involves bloggers getting involved with the magazine including sitting in at staff discussions and being involved with the magazines content. A huge acknowledgement of the contribution bloggers are making in the fashion industry.

uk beauty blog kawaii jewelleryuk beauty blog kawaii jewelleryUS bloggers are in a superior position to us UK bloggers. There are many different fashion blogging conferences in the states but  can’t think of any aimed at fashion bloggers this side of the pond. UK bloggers are rapidly increasing in numbers and the quality of some of these blogs is astounding. PRs are now realising the importance of the blogging community with more and more PRs reaching out to bloggers and bloggers only PR events being held all over the capital. But we are still lagging behind the states. I’ve heard whispers that IFB may hold a conference in London some time in the future but nothing is confirmed as of yet. Some aspects of the media seem to hold the impression that bloggers aren’t of importance but we are. We are quickly becoming a key aspect of the fashion industry. Unlike traditional magazines that publish monthly and who sometimes decide content based on who buy advertising space from the magazine, bloggers are largely independent and content is often published daily which allows us to be current. We are capable of writing high quality, well thought out posts on different areas of fashion and the breadth of subjects on blogs is amazing.               uk beauty blog kawaii jewelleryWe tackle issues, cover fashion shows, talk about budget fashion (which magazines like Vogue seem incapable of doing – helloooo £100 for a pair of shoes is NOT budget fashion), examine fashion from other cultures, review products and services truthfully and give an honest viewpoint unswayed by the influence of brands. If it’s a sponsored post we say so. There is transparency in fashion blogging that seems lacking in magazines. In some ways we are held up to a much higher moral standing.                                         Untitled

So is it time UK magazines realised our importance. Should they be hosting events like the Lucky FABB conference and should the fashion/beauty industry be behind us like MAC and milk studios in the US who are sponsoring the IFB Evolving Influence bloggers conference? I personally think they should. Realise our worth and realise that you need to work WITH us. Bloggers are here to stay. WE are the future and like it or not a lot of women (and men) take notice of what we say. Our opinions count and I think that’s a good thing!

  1. You are so right. They all should realize the power of the bloggers and the blogging community. You guys are so talented and is such a joy to read your blogs. Keep up the good work.

  2. Hear hear! Couldn't agree more with what you've said. Unfortunately I think the mainstream fashion media in the UK still view us as a threat. But if they keep continuing to sit up and take notice, it'll be their loss. Whether they like it or not, we are making serious in roads in the industry as bloggers while magazine and newspaper sales continue to plummet. They really have no choice but to get with the times.

  3. They should work with us not against us. Thanks for commenting.

  5. I think you make an excellent point, too many journalists think we are here to take their jobs from under them. What they don't realise is working with us would help them survive in the tough times they are going through. We would have fresh ideas and we are way more in touch with the target market.

p.s 'more dash for cash' - oh yes I can spend £200 on a pair of trousers. NOT.

  6. This is a great post and a very valid one. The UK are so far behind the US when it comes to blogging but then as a small country I suppose we are with most things. However, a lot of PRs particularly those in the beauty sector really have their fingers on the pulse and host regular events for bloggers and the fashion scene seems to be coming onboard. I went to blogger event hosted by River Island last week which was very well organised and also the tech industry welcome bloggers with open arms as well as the book PRs. I guess the next step is to take it up a gear which is hosting conferences and blogger events as well as awards. There are lots of blogger social meet ups going on around the country which are brilliant but I have not come across a blogger conference in the UK. Also there does not seem to be a Blogger Awards event held in the South East (please correct me if I am wrong) there is the Manchester Blogger Awards and the Irish Blog Awards but nothing for London which is surprising as there are hundreds of bloggers based in the capital. So the question is - is anyone interested in organising one? I am as I think it would a great way of raising the profile of bloggers in the UK. Also I interviewed the lovely Jennine on my blog and she confirmed that there will indeed be an IFB conference in the UK so that is fantastic news.

  7. Great post and I really agree. Bloggers are so important. I think it was said in the IFB Conference yesterday that they are a bridge to magazine. They are more relateable as we also discuss affordable fashion.
I am very excited about the rumours for an IFB conference being held in the UK.

  8. Really good post Faye, with some very relavent and valid points. Bloggers are important and are changing things in the same way social media is changing the way news in general is reported. It is sad that we are behind in the UK but I hope that the tide is turning. I believe there is room for both traditional journalism as well as blogging, but everything has to evolve and adapt as technology changes our world.

  9. great post! i saw that glamour magazine are doing Young & Posh - an area of the website written by bloggers, which is pretty cool, to essentially be writing under the umbrella of an international fashion magazine.. I guess just numbers wise, there are so many more fashion bloggers out in the US (i would say about 90% of the bloggers i follow are american). Things may change for the future though! :)

Ondo Lady: yes i think the way forward is for bloggers to power it themselves - afterall that's how fashion blogging kind of took off, & then the advertisers realised how powerful they were.. So yes, keep us updated if you put anything together!

(just found you via IFB by the way, haha! good blog, just google friend connected w you :)

  10. I'm going to retweet this. I didn't realize UK media was behind U.S. in terms of recognizing fashion bloggers.
